Picking your own strawberries

Published on 19 May 2025 at 20:36

Nothing marks the beginning of summer like heading out to your local strawberry farm and picking your own berries. That is our humble opinion anyways. Strawberry season usually begins around the second week of June, just as school is finishing up and you are switching gears into summer mode. Picking your own strawberries is for everyone and anyone. We love to see you all.

We welcome the young moms who come out with their little ones, who are there to pick a quart and capture the moment of a child enjoying a freshly picked berry straight out of the patch.

Then there are the social pickers, "Let's come with a couple of bowls, start a row and see what happens". Strawberry picking can be a great social activity, working across from each other with busy hands makes easy conversation. Sometimes you come back looking for more containers (because once you start you just can't stop) and sometimes you pick half a bowl and are satisfied with enough berries for fresh eating and a wonderful visit with a friend.

Lastly we have the serious pickers. Picking your own berries is definitely more economical and there is nothing like field grown fresh berries. These pickers are on a mission, they are here to fill their freezers and jam their jars.

And isn't it wonderful that we're all in the same field, picking the same berries, enjoying the same sunshine.

If you have never picked berries at our farm before, here is how it works.

  • Bring your own containers. It doesn't matter what kind; bowls, Tupperware containers, used berry flats and quarts, pails. We've seen it all.
  • Come up to the till and weigh your containers. We will record your weights,
  • Head out to the patch and start at a flag. Sometimes the flag is at the beginning of the row, sometimes you start part way down, and pick up where someone else left off.
  • If you are with two people it works well to each take a side of the row. Work across from each other.
  • When you are done picking, take the flag and leave it where you stopped. If you made it to the end of the row, leave your flag at the end of the row.
  • We have a few different varieties. and you are welcome to try out different rows, just remember to move your flag to where you stop picking, before moving to the next row.
  • Take your berries up to the till and we will weigh your full containers, and subtract the weight of the empty containers. We charge by the pound.

Picking your own strawberries is sometimes marketed as an experience, and sometimes as a way to save money. We say it's both. things don't have to be purely experiential with no practical value. On the other side, practicality doesn't need to be dull and dreary. Life is pretty great when picking some fruit for yourself, sharing it with your friends and family and putting some away for the winter also happens to be enjoyable.

We would love to see you at the farm, either to pick your own, or to buy our pre-picked berries. We've got options!
